These companies don’t just provide services. They control the infrastructure of value assignment that shapes human possibility.
The people who design these algorithms effectively function as unelected philosopher-kings, encoding their vision of human worth into systems that affect billions of people who never consented to their authority.
The Impossibility of Algorithmic Appeal
When human authorities make value judgments about you, there are usually appeal processes, advocacy mechanisms, or alternative evaluation systems you can access.
When algorithms make value judgments about you, appeal is typically impossible because:
- You don’t know which algorithms are evaluating you
- You don’t know how they’re calculating your worth
- You don’t have access to the data they’re using
- You can’t communicate with the algorithmic systems
- The companies operating the algorithms have no obligation to explain or justify their determinations
You become subject to algorithmic authority without any of the protections that democratic societies supposedly provide against arbitrary power.
The Collapse of Value Pluralism
Human societies have traditionally supported multiple, competing value systems. You might be valued differently by your family, your profession, your community, your religion, or your social movement.
This value pluralism provided resilience. If one system devalued you, others might recognize your worth differently.
Algorithmic value assignment is creating a convergent monoculture of valuation. The same data patterns that make you “low value” to hiring algorithms also make you “low value” to dating algorithms, loan algorithms, and social media algorithms.
Cross-platform data sharing and similar algorithmic approaches mean that algorithmic categories are becoming universal categories. There are fewer and fewer alternative value systems that can recognize worth that algorithms cannot detect.

Perhaps the most tragic aspect of algorithmic value assignment is how it prevents people from discovering their own worth.
If algorithms consistently signal that you’re not valuable in particular ways, you may never attempt activities where you might discover hidden talents, develop unexpected capabilities, or find meaningful purposes.
If algorithmic filtering prevents you from accessing certain opportunities, you never get the chance to prove the algorithms wrong.
If algorithmic recommendations consistently guide you toward narrow categories of people, content, and activities, you never explore the full range of human possibility.
The algorithm doesn’t just assign value. It prevents the experiences that might lead to different self-valuations.
Beyond Resistance: Structural Reality
The typical response to critiques of algorithmic power is to suggest individual resistance strategies: use different platforms, opt out of data collection, game the algorithms, or build alternative systems.
These responses miss the structural reality.
Algorithmic value assignment is not a service you can decline. It’s the infrastructure of contemporary social organization. Opting out means opting out of employment, credit, dating, housing, education, and social connection.
Building alternative systems requires resources and network effects that are only available to people who already have high algorithmic value.
The system is not broken. It’s working exactly as designed. The question is whether we want to live in a society where algorithms decide human worth before humans get the chance to decide for themselves.
