“Responsibility” initiatives and “healthy conversation” projects are essentially marketing efforts that cannot address the underlying economic incentives driving algorithmic behavior.

Until we change what we value and how we measure success in digital communication systems, algorithms will continue amplifying division because division is profitable.

The question is not whether we can build better algorithms. The question is whether we can build better value systems.
